Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on Japanese Prime Minister's Offering to the Yasukuni Shrine
2009-04-23

Q: It is reported that Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso sent an offering to the Yasukuni Shrine on April 21. Do you have any comment?

A: A correct view and proper handling of historical issues by the Japanese Government constitutes the political foundation for China-Japan relations. Japan should honor its commitments, match its deeds with words and safeguard the overall interest of China-Japan ties in a responsible manner.

China has already expressed its grave concern and dissatisfaction to Japan through diplomatic channels, stressing that, given the high sensitivity of historical issues, any erroneous moves by Japan will produce grave and negative impact on bilateral relations. We urge the Japanese side to speak and act cautiously for proper handling.
